4000 Islands on the Mekong River in Laos

We have enjoyed a few days in Vientiane but need to continue. It would be crazy to be near Angkor Wat, one of the real wonders of the world and not have to visit it. So we started the first trip of that Cambodian adventure and took an overnight VIP bus to Pakse city of Laos, where we connected by a short bus to the first stop. , Small Det Don Village, located in the Mekong River Area is called 4000 Islands.

Don Det is unlike any other place in Southeast Asia. This is the most famous island for tourists in the Mekong region called 4000 Islands. A place where time stands still or at least that. Don Det enjoys a much-earned reputation among backpackers and other budget travelers as a great place to start and relax. It is famous for two main reasons: great relaxation and scenery.

Don Det itself is a mix of riverside bungalows, quaint rural houses, bars and restaurants with breathtaking waterfront views of the Mekong River. The island's western island declares the most beautiful sunset found anywhere in Southeast Asia.

In addition to relaxing the best things to do at Don Det are: kayaking, tube riding, cycling and walking.

Rowing on the Mekong River
We spend the day sailing around many islands in a two-person kayak. We started the tour right after breakfast. We joined the group to be able to explore the waterways on the island without getting lost and would definitely return home safely. In addition, our local guides know the best islands to visit when we go south to the Cambodian border. After a few hours sailing through some wonderful islands and countryside, we stopped at a beach to rest and have lunch with fried rice, fish and fruit according to our instructions. provided. This gave my wife and me a chance to talk to the other members of our twelve-person group.

After lunch, we paddled to the island where we could visit the spectacular Khone Pha Pheng waterfall. These are the largest waterfalls measured by the amount of water flowing through all Southeast Asian countries. We kayak and a short walk to the waterfall is very impressive. The rolling water mountains are hypnotized to see and are a great place to take photos.

We continued rowing until mid-afternoon when we went to the long-tailed marina, where we would start looking for the famous and elusive Irrawaddy dolphin.

Irrawaddy dolphin is a rare and precious freshwater dolphin found in many major rivers in the world. Only about 90 dolphins are found here in the 4000 Islands of the Mekong River. They are similar in appearance to saltwater cousins but are gray and slightly smaller in size

We were lucky and caught two separate fruits of about six or seven dolphins each. See them as attractive and a truly special experience as they pass through the Mekong River.

Cycling around Islands Don Det and Don Kohon
The next day, we got up early to explore the Don Det and Don Kohon islands by bike. The rickety old bike ride is a perfect way to explore these two islands as both islands are surrounded by quaint dirt roads with palm trees swaying in the wind. The roads take you through the beautiful countryside of photogenic rice fields and local agricultural land. In the middle of the road around Don Det, an old French bridge was built about a hundred years ago, connecting Don Let with the neighboring island of Don Kohon. We kicked over the bridge and began exploring the second picturesque island including Don Kong village and Li Phi waterfall and their beaches. Our adventure includes following different random roads as well as watching wooden houses Don Let face us from the water.

Each island has a sunset and a sunrise. The wooden house and the Don Let inn have broken up respectively. We stayed by the sunset.

Because the beauty on the river bank is spectacular, we decided to show and reward ourselves the best hotel in Don Let. It is a wonderful small place appropriately called The Eden Eden Hotel. It is centrally located on the river near the town and ferry. The hotel is very beautiful, has large rooms, comfortable beds and riverside patios that we enjoyed. Air-conditioned room with spectacular views of the river has become a perfect place to call home when visiting Don Det. Large swimming pool and restaurant with terrace table overlooking the Mekong River only adds to the great atmosphere.

Tubing down the Mekong

Compared to the crazy pleasures of the 2000s when traveling in Vang Vien, going to Don Det is a much more calm and comfortable experience. On our last day, we reassured ourselves for a few hours and slowly drifted down the cool Mekong River through our hotel and Cau Phap connected the two islands, then continued for about 3km.

After renting our pipes at Don Det with only 10,000 kip, we launched into the main beach and took off on our picturesque Mekong River. We conveniently arranged to be picked up by a local fisherman and returned a few hours later.

What a great way to spend our last day at Don Det.
